15.11.2019

The East-West exhibition (the collection of Eastern and Western art of the Dondukov-Korsakov princely family) has opened at the National History Museum of Belarus, BelTA learned from the museum.

The National History Museum has arranged the exhibition in collaboration with the National Art Museum of Belarus. Most items have been put on show for the first time. This is a unique project because it showcases works of both Eastern and Western art of the 16th-19th centuries that were assembled by several generations of the Dondukov-Korsakov family.

The exhibition demonstrates porcelain pieces made in Italy and in Meissen, Germany, tableware decorated with polychrome enamel, stone sculptures and porcelain vases of the 16th-17th centuries from China.

The project is dedicated to the history of the National History Museum. The museum originated from several museums in the early 20th century and since then has become the main institution for collecting historical artifacts.

In the 1920s, the museum received property from palaces and mansions, including furniture, tableware, weapons, and household items. The East-West exhibition features part of the collection of the Dondukov-Korsakov princely family. Items of the collection are now preserved in museums of Belarus and Russia. In the 19th century, the collection included several hundred works of applied arts of the 16th-19th centuries, but most of them were lost.

The East-West exhibition will be on view until 12 January 2020.
